Self help tips
- Make sure you have a good diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to supply essential vitamins
- Try to get plenty of rest
- Try to avoid getting overtired, stressed or run down
- Use a soft toothbrush
- Clean your teeth after meals and then use an antiseptic mouthwash to keep your mouth clean and help prevent infection
- If you smoke, try to give up or at least cut down (although this may trigger ulcers in the short-term, you should see an improvement in the long run)
- Avoid spicy food and food that causes mouth ulcers to sting such as toast
- If you know that eating a particular food provokes an ulcer for you (it could be chocolate, coffee or peanuts), avoid eating that food until your ulcer has completely healed
- Consult your doctor if mouth ulcers are still present after 10 days
